The birth of a new child comes with a multitude of new experiences: breastfeeding and formula feeding, soothing cries, diaper changing, and yes, staying up at all hours of the night. While being a new mom can be very rewarding, it can also be equally taxing – especially when one isn’t used to poor sleep quality.

For new moms who are struggling to get decent shuteye, read on for helpful tips so that you and your bub can get the restful sleep you need and deserve.

Establish a Solid Bedtime Routine

Living life with minimal sleep gets easier with a consistent bedtime routine.

Babies surprisingly crave consistency. By creating a predictable sleep routine, new moms will know how long they have to nap or score a chance to fall into deep sleep. It will also let their babies know that it’s time for sleep. Once past the hazy newborn days, moms can start setting a regular bedtime and wake-up time for themselves and their babies. Turning down the lights to signal bedtime, a gentle massage, reading a bedtime story and a lullaby are ideal, soothing, sleepy-time fodder.

Consistency is key, so aim to follow the same routine at the same time every night.

Try Co-Sleeping

Safe co-sleeping might just be the answer to your sleepless nights.

Since the dawn of time and across the animal kingdom, parents and their babies have snuggled together in slumber. Some babies settle much more easily and quicker when they feel their mom next to them. Plus, it’s a whole lot easier to reach over and soothe a baby when they are within arm’s reach.

Anthropologist James McKenna agrees. In his book Safe Infant Sleep: Expert Answers to Your Co-sleeping Questions, McKenna explains that both adults and babies sleep longer overall and are better rested when they bedshare. And when parents are well-rested, they can make better decisions and have better emotional regulation than those who lack sleep.

However, new moms need to exercise caution when co-sleeping. There are risks involved, so consult your doctor or midwife before trying this sleep life hack. Ensure that your baby is sleeping in a safe, secure environment, which includes placing them on their back, using a firm mattress and avoiding loose bedding, pillows, or stuffed animals in the crib.

Create a Comfy Sleeping Environment

Investing in quality bed linens and blackout curtains could help new moms sleep in and feel refreshed when they get up.

Sure, you’ve kitted out your baby’s nursery with a comfortable crib and soft nightlight, but it doesn’t mean you should forget about your bedroom. For better sleep quality, invest in higher thread count bed sheets, better pillows, blackout curtains, and a plush mattress cover. Falling asleep will be so much easier when you’ve got a cushy bed to lay your head on.

Prioritize Self-Care

Cut yourself some slack and give yourself time to relax when you lack sleep. Even new moms need a break!

Taking care of yourself is crucial for managing sleep deprivation. Whether it’s by indulging in a mug of iced coffee or binge-watching your favorite K-drama, it's okay to use your free time the way you want. If you’re up for it, get some endorphins by squeezing in a few minutes of exercise in your day. You’ll find an increase in energy levels, plus feel less moody about being sleepless.

Make the most of bonding time with your baby with a soothing bath. Baby Dove Hair to Toe Rich Moisture Wash is great for wee bubs with irritated skin due to dryness. Its ophthalmologist, dermatologist and pediatrician-tested pH-neutral and hypoallergenic formula makes bath time a fuss-free and worry-free experience. Plus, it keeps your baby’s skin smooth with its unique ¼ moisturizing cream, prebiotic moisturizer, and 100% skin-natural ingredients to restore essential moisture. Perfect for rubbing your cheek against and keeping them comfy while sleeping.

Next, pamper your sensitive underarm skin with Dove 0% Aluminum Deodorant Roll-On. It has zero alcohol and aluminum, which can irritate your skin. But it does have moisturizing properties that smoothen the underarms while keeping them dry.

Poor sleep quality is an inevitable part of newborn care but remember, it doesn’t last forever. Little ones will eventually get the hang of sleeping through the night. Until then, enjoy your baby’s littleness. In the blink of an eye, they’ll all be grown up and want to hang out with their friends more than you. Cherish their littleness and snuggle with them as you take in that newborn baby smell while you can.
