Cleansing balms are relatively new additions to the skincare world. Once a niche category, they have become the first step in a double-cleansing routine, which has K-beauty roots. It means they also follow K-beauty principles, including deep cleansing, hydration, and gentle effectiveness. Here’s why adding a cleansing balm to your skincare routine is worth it.

What Is a Cleansing Balm?

Usually the first step in a double cleansing routine, cleansing balms deeply clean the pores without drying the skin.

A cleansing balm is a thick and rich balm that often turns into an oil once applied to the skin. As a cleanser, it loosens oil-based products and debris from the pores, making it easier to remove. By gently massaging the balm on your skin with the pads of your fingers, you help unclog your pores of sebum, sweat, dirt, makeup, and sunscreen.

What Are the Benefits of Using Cleansing Balms?

Cleansing balms are considered a “holy grail” product for their many benefits, including delicate yet deep cleansing and completely removing stubborn makeup such as mascara and foundation (they are definitely gentler than makeup wipes!). It does the job without stripping the skin of its natural oils, thanks to a rich and creamy formula that keeps the skin moisturized.

They are suitable for any skin type because of this unique formulation. You can use cleansing balms to cleanse dry skin, which will benefit immensely from its nourishing properties. Its deep-cleaning action also delivers nutrients to the pores since most cleansing balms comprise substantial essential oils. Even though they're oil-based, you can use them if you have oily skin since they break down the sebum and products seated deep within the pores.

Cleansing balms are mild enough to be used day and night. However, you do need to wash them off. You can use them even if you’re not trying to take off heavy makeup. Here are a few tips on utilizing this type of product.

  1. Take a small amount of balm with the special scoop that comes with the packaging.
  2. Spread the balm all over dry skin. Using the pads of your fingers, gently massage the balm onto the skin in small circular motions. Do this until the balm is completely melted into oil.
  3. Add a splash of water to emulsify it into a milky texture and massage some more.
  4. Rinse well with water.
  5. Follow a water-based facial cleanser such as POND's Orange Nectar Jelly Cleanser to wash off the oils and leave the skin fresh and clean. It removes the oil while leaving the skin hydrated and glowing.

Give cleansing balms a go if you want to achieve deep cleansing without drying out your skin. It’s a product that your skin can benefit from whatever your skin type.
