Glutathione benefits go beyond the physical. Naturally produced in the liver, glutathione is a powerful antioxidant found in our cells. Its main function is to reduce oxidative stress in the body to keep it healthy. Unfortunately, our natural glutathione levels decline as we age. It can affect how the body functions.

But what does any of this have to do with the skin? Low glutathione can result in premature aging that manifests in the skin. As an antioxidant, it protects the skin’s surface from oxidative damage caused by free radicals, UV radiation, and pollution. By preventing inflammation, it allows the skin to repair itself. It can also brighten skin and smoothen fine lines.

Dubbed the “master antioxidants,” glutathione performs all these from every cell in the human body. You can supplement your glutathione reserves by adding products that contain it to your skincare routine. Here’s are some glutathione benefits you should know.

It Improves Skin’s Resilience

Glutathione protects the skin against free radicals and environmental pollution.

It’s always better to strengthen the skin than treat problems later. Glutathione acts as a defense against external aggressors that can cause skin inflammation. Comprised of three amino acids: glutamine, glycine, and cysteine, it plays a major role in detoxification. It directly attacks free radicals which, in turn, attack healthy cells. It then enhances the skin’s resilience and improves its condition.

It Brightens and Evens Out Skin Tone

You’ve probably heard of this one, but here’s how it works. A 2014 study in the National Institutes of Health found that glutathione has powerful melanin-inhibiting properties when applied to the skin. This is due to its antioxidant activity and its ability to scavenge damaged cells after UV exposure. According to the study, using glutathione topically can improve skin health as well as improve uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation by regulating melanin production.

The NIH states that a balance of free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for the body to function. Oxidative stress occurs when antioxidants in the body can no longer regulate the free radicals. When this happens, those free radicals damage the cells, proteins, and lipids, which leads to aging and diseases. On the skin, glutathione fights these free radicals and prevents signs of aging. A 2017 study on its anti-aging effects showed that it improves wrinkles, skin elasticity, and overall skin quality.

Look for Brightening Ingredients

You can increase glutathione levels in your body by eating gluta-rich foods, such as spinach and avocados. You can also supplement your diet by using other brightening actives, such as niasorcinol, a powerful ingredient that fades dark spots, evens out the skin tone, and smoothens pores. Use Pond’s Bright Miracle Serum Burst Cream. It harnesses the power of niasorcinol to give you soft, bright, and glowing skin.
